IS ALWAYS is an intimate photographic journal of legendary musician and artist Daniel Johnston by documentarian Jung Kim from a collaboration and friendship that began in 2008. IS ALWAYS gives rare access into the home and life of one of the most prolific artists of our time. Daniel’s home in Waller, Texas, was a creative sanctuary far from the stage and filled with his beloved treasures: his extensive collection of comic books, a menagerie of toys, musical instruments, magic markers and walls of VHS tapes. The photography book includes personal stories by Louis Black (Co-Founder of The Austin Chronicle and SXSW Festival), musician and producer Kramer (Founder of Shimmy-Disc Records) and filmmaker Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Boyhood, Hit Man).

A limited first edition of IS ALWAYS was released at SXSW on March 14, 2023 with a New York City release and exhibit on April 20, 2023. The SXSW release was in conjunction with a fireside chat with Jung Kim and Louis Black at the Austin Convention Center followed by a release party with legendary musicians Tommy McLain, C.C. Adcock, Kathy McCarty (Glass Eye), Kramer, Kami Lyle, Jerome Deupree (Morphine), Joey Spampinato (NRBQ) and Peter More. New York City release included a photo exhibit with special performance by Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio) on launch night, and a second-evening conversation with Louis Black, Marie Javins (DC Comics), Lee Foster (Electric Lady Studios), and Don Goede (Daniel’s longtime friend and tour manager).
